Besednice Moldavites (pronounced "Bes ed neet'
sa") are prized tektites for their eclectic
exotic shapes, clarity and amazing green color. These tektites from this
particular area near Locenice, southern Bohemia, are named Besednice Moldavite,
which are characterized by sharp projecting points protruding out in all
directions from the Moldavite body, are unique in form, and exceptional in
quality. The specimens we carry have been selected for shape and surface
texture. The Besednice specimens are considered by many collectors to be
the most beautiful of all Moldavite due, to the incredible emerald green
color, the unusual shapes and translucency of these rare tektites that are
14.7 million years old. Moldavites are more rare than diamonds or sapphires.
The clay pits at Besednice, Czech Republic, have been closed
for ten years. Moldavite hunters burrowing beneath the 10-foot banks were
encroaching on protected forestland (and getting themselves killed). The
area is now behind patrolled chain-link fencing and reportedly is slated
to become a national park. Folks that provided a supplemental income for
their families by digging these fine gems are now selling their "keepers".
When they're gone, they're gone. I deal directly with buyers in the Czech
Republic who buy from the locals. At the big Tucson show this year (January,2007),
Czech dealers were asking 3 to 5 times the prices seen just a few years ago.
Very soon they will be essentially out of reach (or simply not available
at all).
